During the First World War, on December 24, 1914, there was an unofficial ceasefire on the Western Front when France, Britain and Germany kept Christmas. According to some reports, the unofficial ceasefire took place all week before Christmas and that British and German troops exchanged salutes and seasonal songs between their trenches.  The truce was brief, but spontaneous. When German soldiers burned Christmas trees, it quickly spread to the Western Front.
